Meet the Team
As an independent financial consultant with over 10 years of experience, I help businesses and individuals achieve their goals, as well as create simplicity in their life by providing many solutions under one roof.
I am a proud graduate of the University of Iowa and have continued my education with industry certifications, including Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®). Previously, I founded and developed a Human Resources/Staffing business in 2005, successfully grew to over 1,200 employees and sold it in 2010.
Having moved to Austin in 2007, I was captivated by the amazing people and culture in the city and set out to give back as much as I could to the community. Currently, I serve as the Past Chair of the Austin Young Chamber of Commerce which is the largest and fastest growing young professional organization in Central Texas. Additionally, am a board-member of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. As a Leadership Austin Emerge graduate, I have been spurred to volunteer for a number of non-profit boards and their fundraising events (Ace Academy, YMBL, Cru Austin). In 2015, I won the Austin Under 40 Award for Financial Services & Insurance.
At home, I have a great family that inspires me to do my best work. My wife, Brooke and I met in college and were married soon after. We have two children, Oliver and Scarlett, and enjoy hiking on nature trails, traveling the country (trying to hit all 50 states with the kids before they graduate college), going to movies and catching live music. We support Autism-related charities and want to raise awareness of special needs challenges and how to transition these children to becoming well-adjusted adults.
My greatest desire is to inspire people (myself included) to feel good about their meaningful, life decisions. All of those decisions involve finances and it’s best to make them wisely. I believe that we are here to live with purpose and power, finding fulfillment as much as possible along the way.
Originally an Austinite, I was born in Austin, raised in Big Rapids, MI (aka Small Town, USA) and returned home to Austin in 2013. Searching for the meaning of life, I studied great thought-leaders of Western civilization at St. John’s College in the mountains of Santa Fe, NM and have cherished books ever since. Since college, my studies have focused on statistics, retirement planning and business planning.
Professionally, I have explored the realms of fine art, luxury design, hospitality and commercial real estate development. My career in financial consulting began in 2015 and I immediately knew that I had found my professional calling and personal mission. In this time, I have observed a broad perspective of financial advice at different types of firms and I appreciate Echelon’s unique positioning to be a positive, significant influence in client’s lives. We mean it when we say that we always put clients first.
My son, Julian, has taught me more about dinosaurs, monster trucks and hugs, than I ever thought I’d know. For fun, I run the hills of my neighborhood, achieve new yoga postures, contribute to the greater Austin community and boat on the gorgeous waters of Lake Travis.
Private Investment Manager
As a postgraduate I was faced with the decision to complete a law degree (Juris Doctor) or Master in Business Administration (MBA). The law degree offered the opportunity to consult with clients, determine their issues and help them find solutions. The skills of an MBA enable one to use innovative methods that potentially make money work more efficiently. I am fortunate to have developed a hybrid advisor practice that combines a consultative approach to discover what’s important about money to my clients and then provide them with strategies that can potentially help clients achieve their goals.
I practiced law in a corporate context in Houston and Abilene for about 20 years. Then moved to Austin in 1993 to transition to a new career as financial advisor. I eventually took on the task of creating an investment advisory service at a financial institution. I also provided estate planning to some clients. I remained there for 15 years. Three years ago, I elected to go independent and joined Upstream Investment Partners, where I met Adam Flagg. Now I am part of the Echelon family.
I attended the University of Texas as a Plan II Major but graduated with a BA in History. Then I entered UT School of Law graduating with a JD. I went back to Houston to practice law. In 2007, I secured the Certified Financial Planner designation ( CFP). I hold Series 7 and 66 securities-licenses. Also, I hold a Group 1 Insurance License.
I have been married to Cheryl (whom I met in high school) for 41 years. We now live in Dripping Springs in the same neighborhood as our daughter and her family including two super grandkids. Our son works on the trading desk of a hedge fund in Manhattan, lives in Connecticut with his wife and three glorious grandchildren. Cheryl (her grandmother name is “Cha-cha”) is a gourmet chef and baker. We both are keen dog fanciers and trainers. Cha-cha has 2 miniature Poodles; I have a feisty Border Terrier and enjoy competing in performance events such as Agility, Barn Hunt and Earthdog.
